Introducing New VISTA Member: Kushal Singh

Hi, my name is Kushal Singh I moved here from New Orleans and have been having a great time since. A little about myself I have a multitude of hobbies but chief among them are cooking, baking, calligraphy, building computers, and gardening. My current goals are to read more about philosophy and interesting historical periods and like everyone else, trying to get in shape. Additionally, this would be my second year with AmeriCorps but first VISTA position and I sincerely cannot wait to see all that I will learn. Lastly, I’m really excited to join AVANCE-Austin in serving BIPOC communities because these are the communities that have helped raise me into the person I am today.

How did you first learn about AVANCE-Austin and why did you want to get involved?

I was introduced to the organization through Ms. Holst, from the Literacy Coalition, who told me the mission of this organization and that they were looking for a VISTA so I happily applied. As for my reason for involvement, it’s to understand how non-profit programs operate.

What is your favorite thing about AVANCE-Austin?

I really appreciate the folks I'm working with they are really amazing people who care about this issue and it shows.

What was your favorite toy growing up?

My favorite toy would have to be yu-gi-oh cards, I would play with my friends and learned all about systems of magic.

What was your favorite book growing up?

It’s a tie between The Giving Tree and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

What do you hope to accomplish as an AVANCE-Austin VISTA Member?

To understand how the mechanisms of a non-profit works. And then optimize it for the people we serve so that no matter who you are we have something for you, the way you need it.
